All about insurance with a criminal record
In the last eight years, have you come into contact with the police or justice system as a suspect or have you been criminally convicted? If so, you are required to disclose this when purchasing insurance. Unfortunately, a criminal record can have a negative impact on taking out new insurance. We explain.
How does a criminal record affect my insurance?
"In the past eight years, have you been in contact with the police or justice system as a suspect?"
This question is asked by the insurer on all insurance applications. You are required to disclose a criminal history. The insurer asks this question to determine the reliability of the policyholder. The main concern is the potential risk to the insurer. Based on that information, the insurer assesses whether or not they want to enter into an insurance agreement. For example, they look at whether criminal history has anything to do with the insurance you want to purchase. Have you had a driving disqualification in the past, for example because of alcohol abuse? Then most insurance companies will not want to provide you with car insurance. You simply pose too great a risk then. Will the insurance company accept your application? Then the premium will be higher than normal.
Can an insurer simply cancel insurance with a criminal history?
Do you not mention your criminal record with the insurance application and the insurer finds out? Then he can stop your insurance immediately. Also, it will be even more difficult to get insurance in the future. Failure to fill in the questions on the insurance application truthfully means you are committing insurance fraud. Many insurance companies will not accept you if you are registered as a fraudster. You are then listed in the database of the CIS Foundation, where your information is visible to all affiliated insurers and agents.
Am I required to disclose my criminal record when applying for insurance?
The insurer has no insight into your criminal record and therefore knows nothing about your criminal history in advance. However, if they ask you about it when you apply for insurance, you are obliged to answer honestly. If you conceal information, you are committing insurance fraud. As soon as the insurance company finds out, your insurance will be terminated and you will lose your right to compensation in the event of damage or an accident. You can weigh up the consequences: with a criminal record, there is still a chance that a regular insurance company will accept your application, depending on the offense on your criminal record. If you are registered for fraud, no regular insurance company will accept you and you will automatically end up with Vereende. This involves additional costs, such as a higher premium.
How long does a criminal record remain on file?
How long your criminal record remains registered depends on the type of offense. In general, a criminal record often expires after five years and you should be able to obtain insurance from a regular insurance company after just five years. However, if you offense was less than eight years ago, you still need to mention it to the insurance company. In this case, you could apply for a VOG (Certificate of Good Conduct) to prove that your past does not constitute an objection to insurance. The insurer can then decide if they want to insure you.

Why do insurers impose requirements when buying insurance?
An insurer has no duty of acceptance. One exception is health insurance. A health insurer is required by law to accept you for the basic package of a health insurance policy. So they may not refuse you for this, but they may refuse you for supplementary insurance. If an insurer feels you pose too great a risk, they may reject your application.
The insurer may also choose to accept insurance only under certain conditions. So in that case, they set requirements when taking out insurance. For example, because the risk of damage has been assessed higher or because of your medical situation. Certain conditions can be, for example:
- The insurer does not cover certain risks
- The policy terms remain the same, but you will pay a higher premium
- Policy terms and premium remain the same, but your deductible is higher
- There are certain requirements for eligibility for coverage, such as fire safety.
What are the acceptance requirements for insurance with Vereende?
When accepting or not accepting an insurance application, the insurer tries to assess in advance how high the risk is. Someone with a criminal record they see as a greater moral hazard. This assumes that someone with a criminal record is less likely to follow insurance rules or pay the premium.
The risk for the insurer is therefore greater than normal. This is also the case with Vereende. They specialize in special risks, but there are a number of conditions that must be met. They have a number of conditions for taking out insurance:
- You must pay three months of premium in advance, even if you choose to pay monthly instead of quarterly, semiannual or annual payments.
- The insurance does not take effect until the premium for the first three months is paid and they receive a signed application form.
- In most cases, you must pay a deposit. Are you late in paying the premium? Then they can use this deposit to offset the unpaid premium. If you pay the premium on time each month, you will get the deposit back when the insurance is terminated.
When can I get insurance from a regular insurance company again?
When you can reinsure yourself with a regular insurance company depends on how long your criminal record remains registered. This depends on the type of offense you committed. In general, a criminal record often expires after five years and you should be able to get insurance from a regular insurance company after just five years. Is your offense less than eight years ago? Then you should still mention it to the insurance company. You could then apply for a VOG (Certificate of Good Conduct) to prove that your past is not an objection to insurance. The insurer can then decide if they want to insure you.
