All about non-payment
Of course, there may be times when you are unable to pay your insurance premium, or maybe you just forgot. Don't worry, you won't get a CIS registration right away. If you fail to pay more often and your arrears increase, you will be listed as a defaulter, with all the consequences this entails. We explain when you are a defaulter and how this affects your insurance.
When is someone a defaulter?
As mentioned above, you are not immediately considered a defaulter after one non-payment. You may have just had a month with quite a few large expenses that prevented you from paying the premium on time. Most insurers are not too hard on you about this. You will initially receive a warning, after which you can still pay the premium. However, after several warnings from the insurer, do you still not pay? Then you will be considered a defaulter. A defaulter is someone who uses a product or service without paying for it.
Consequences of non-payment on insurance
Have you forgotten to pay your insurance premium? If so, you will first receive a reminder from your insurer. If you then pay that payment reminder on time, there is no problem. Are you more than 30 days late in paying? Then, in the case of car insurance, your insurer may suspend coverage. Your license plate will be cancelled at the RDW and your car insurance will be suspended. Your car is then no longer insured. You will not be allowed to drive it. A suspension appears in the system and is visible to all insurers.
If you are more than 50 days late in paying the premium, your insurer may cancel the insurance. Expulsion means that your insurer terminates the insurance. You no longer have to pay insurance premiums, but you are no longer insured. Do you still have premium arrears outstanding? Then even if your insurance is cancelled, you still have to pay it.
If your insurance is cancelled, you will be registered as a defaulter in the CIS database. The CIS database is maintained by the CIS Foundation. They keep all insurance information that is important to share, such as when an insurance policy is cancelled for non-payment. All member insurance companies can access the database to obtain, store and exchange information about their customers.
An insurer always checks to see if someone has a CIS registration before they accept an insurance application. So a CIS registration will always surface and may cause you problems when applying for insurance. With a CIS registration, there is a very good chance that a regular insurance company will not accept your application for insurance. You then pose too great a risk to the insurer.
How long do you remain registered as a defaulter?
A CIS registration for non-payment usually remains in place for 3 to 5 years. This depends on the nature and severity of the situation. As long as the CIS registration remains in place, it is visible to all insurers. A regular insurance company will not want to insure you, but fortunately you can always turn to Vereende. Vereende was set up specifically to insure special risks. Even with a CIS registration, you can still take out insurance through Vereende. They have a more lenient acceptance policy and accept everyone in principle. Once your CIS registration has been removed, you can take out insurance with a regular insurance company again.
